The ethics surrounding meals hasn't always been a major factor in ones decision about what to take in. In the beginning, we might have to actually hunt or gather the meals to be able to survive. The choice of what was breakfast every day, lunch or dinner exclusively relied about what was accessible to us. The ethical questions will only be met with a result of a modernized food system, in which other options pertaining to food became accessible and convenient. In the essay Consider the Lobster by David Foster Wallace, the author identifies lobsters in New England in the 1800's as having an " Unbelievable large quantity (238). ” These crustaceous creatures were all over the shores of New Britain. Wallace publishes articles about the Boston seaside as, " being full of lobsters after hard storms… (238). ” Yet, Lobster were deemed " low-class” and as Wallace states, " …eaten only by the poor and institutionalized (237). ” It was considered unethical to even feed the poor lobster " …more than once a week (238). ” This was up-to-date New England, which ultimately changed at the turn of the century, in the same way Lobster moved from getting " low class” to " chewable fuel”. While the world became more developing, food started to be centralized. The shift coming from small businesses to large companies started to take place. The lobster industry improved as well during these times as Wallace details, " Maine's earliest lobster industry was based around a dozen this sort of seaside canneries in the 1840's, from which lobster was shipped as a long way away as California… (238). ” Just like the lobster industry in New Britain, many companies in the us started to fulfill the demands for products to achieve a profit. Ethics became second to making funds. Corporations could produce a great deal that they could drive the price down, elevating its value and rendering it more accessible and widely consumed.
