Cultural Big difference and Its Effects on Design Methodologies pertaining to User Exploration with the Focus on Comparison among Korean and Dutch Members

문화적 차이가 사용자 연구 디자인 방법론에 미치는 영향 한국과 네덜란드의 참여자 성향 비교를 중심으로 Department of business Design. 2007. 75p. Consultant: Professor Lee, Kun-Pyo

As business competition has expanded past domestic range toward a major international spectrum, understanding users'cultural contexts plays a crucial role in design procedure. Ranging from statistical data study, usability testing, and observational research to user participatory design, current practices of user analysis methodologies fluctuate in their aims and information gathering approaches. However , the majority of these methodologies were developed in North America and Europe, thus one may question if these types of methods would work as well with individuals from other civilizations.

The newspaper explores the cultural effects on the opinions collected in and the process of user study and the need for adapting them to different ethnical contexts. Books research and previous empirical findings indicated the existence of dissimilarity among individualistic-low framework culture and collectivistic-high circumstance culture during the interaction means of user study. We assumed four elements which impact user research methodologies: spontaneity of participation, uncertainty avoidance, criticizing design and attitude in group. Three end user research strategies, a probe technique, a usability test and a focus group interview, were selected to get the research to observe affects of four factors. In a probe technique which in turn heavily relies upon uncertainty, Korean participants' low spontaneity influences sufficiency of results, plus they did not really work with the ambiguous formatting of workbook well. Within a usability test, Korean participants revealed fewer problems than Dutch members. While Nederlander participants often play around with products, Korean members felt unpleasant with ‘observed' and ‘tested' situation. Finally, in a target group interview, Korean participants' activeness for discussion was lower and so they needed additional time to feel comfortable to express opinions. They received more active, especially, following the intermission. These kinds of differentiations exposed in 3 methods highlight on the need to consider users' cultural contexts when planning and conducting user research.
